A Whole Lot of Updates

So, we have a lot of updates and it is about time for me to blog about them. First off, we are moving to Salt Lake City! It was getting to the point where I had to let the professor in charge of student teaching know if I wanted to stay in town or go elsewhere. We decided to take a risk (because Brandon doesn't have a job yet) and I told him I would like to be assigned somewhere in the Salt Lake District. When we are going to move up is still up in the air; it will just depend on when Brandon will need to start work (I am pretty confident he will find a job). Now, here are more individual updates.

Dana: I started working at the University Journal again and my job was to help with whatever was needed. For the most part I just did layout. Well, this week the Accent editor told McKenzie she needed to quit and now I am the new Accent editor! Accent is a little bit of everything in my opinion: arts and entertainment, features, and just the more lighter side of journalism. Accent was actually the first section I was editor over and I loved it. There is more I can do for layout and with the stories being more "light and fluffy" people don't normally get upset over the content. It only publishes once a week which is nice and not stressful. I am considering next Monday (March 5) my debut as Accent editor because I created the story assignments going in it as opposed to this week where the stories were already assigned by the old editor. I will probably post my March 5 layout on this blog.

The other main thing is Camp Kesem. Things have been picking up there and on Thursday we had a benefit concert where we raised over $500! We still have a ways to go, but we will get there.

Brandon: He took the GRE on Thursday and he did really well! He got a 155 on the quantitive and a 155 on verbal; the highest score you can get on each section is 170. He doesn't know what he got on the writing section yet, but I am sure he did well. He submitted his application for the Macc program at SUU (the program is online so it doesn't interfer with us moving). We'll see what happens there. He also started an application for the University of Utah, but since that isn't due until April 1 we are going to wait a bit to hear from SUU. The other thing new with Brandon is he had an interview with the Utah State Tax Commission. He hasn't heard anything yet and is looking for other jobs just in case.

I don't want this message to be completely words and so here is a picture of Sam (I realized I never posted a good picture of him). I know no one in my family really cares but whatever:

Front Page!

So at the University Journal even though I have helped design a lot of pages I have never done the front page. This page is reserved for the editor-in-chief and since I have never been editor-in-chief I think you can put two and two together. Well, on Wednesday it was a crazy day! We didn't have a copy chief and so Kenzie was helping a lot with editing. I asked her if she wanted me to start on the page (which I have done before but I have never done the whole page) and she said yes. In the end, I ended up doing the whole page and I am pretty proud of it:

The Return of Rote

The semester before I got married I decided it would be my last semester at the University Journal. I felt like there wasn't a lot more I could do after four years and what I liked to call the "original staff" had all moved on and it just wasn't enjoyable anymore.

Well, when I was dropped from the student teaching program this semester I started helping out with layout just to have something to do. I was helping out today when Captain (the advisor whose real name is John Gholdston) came up to me and said that he was going to put me back on the staff and pay me in appreciation of what I have been doing. So I am now a layout assistant and babysitter of the website (there are a lot of people who work on the website.)

So here is a picture of me back in the newsroom (I think I am the only staff member who hasn't taken a picture with a computer):

P.S. Also to explain my title: at the Journal there is a pirate theme and everyone gets a pirate name. My pirate name is Rote which is German for Red (which obviously is the color of my hair and Captain did the German word because he is fluent in German).
