Poem About Bubba

Okay, I know the title of this post is hinting to a lame post, but maybe once I explain why I am posting this it won't be so lame anymore:

1. I am in a poetry class. I am only taking it because it covers a credit for graduation. Except for my phase in high school where I wrote I bunch of poetry I don't really write anymore unless it is assigned. I have nothing against creative writers, it is just not something I enjoy doing. I am giving this little story because I wrote this poem for my class, originally when I told Steph that I was writing a poem about our nephew she just looked at me weirdly and asked if I often have desires to write about my nieces and nephews. I don't.

The reason why I wrote about Bubba was because of the specific assignment I had. What we had to do was we were given a random picture and we had to first describe the picture and then we had to relate it to something in our lives. The picture I had was of a little girl stuck in a bucket crying. It was the most depressing but at the same time the cutest photo. What came to my head was how when I got married my nephew, Bubba, got hurt a couple of days before and got a huge scab, which showed in all of the wedding pictures he was in. I felt so bad for him that he got hurt, but at the same time he looks cute in the pictures. I am not saying I was happy that he got hurt, but I didn't think it ruined the pictures.

2. So, the reason why I am posting this is I have had a few people bother me about me sharing my poems. I don't like sharing my poems anymore. There are a lot of reasons for this, but the main thing is I don't think I am that good and my poetry is personal to me. So by having my poetry out there people can critic it and if they don't like it (which is fine) it would hurt my feelings. I feel okay to post this poem because it is not really personal and almost all people who read this blog know Bubba.

Anyways.....here it is.

"Pictures"

I’m not quite sure how she got in the bucket,
her body folded up in half with her feet sticking up
and her hands clinging to the sides as she tries to free herself.

Maybe the little girl thought it was a chair,
maybe she thought it would be funny,
or maybe she is a victim to an older sibling bully.

I guess it doesn’t matter how she got stuck.
All that matters is the picture
because even though it was sad at the time,
when looking at the picture now
it’s just cute and funny.

It reminds me of when little Bubba fell.
He was excited to see his Mom and Dad
and tumbled down the cement stairs
as he was running to the car to hug his parents.

After that, he ended up having a battle scab
right in the middle of his forehead.

Just days before his Aunt's wedding.

We knew it wouldn't heal by then
and his mom was worried
of how the pictures would look.

But when the day came,
Bubba looked adorable in his big blue tie
and he ran around excitedly outside.

So, when it came time for pictures,
he didn't want to be in them.
All he wanted to do was play.

He would squirm in his Dad's arms
or run away completely from the camera.
And Even though his big red spot
is in the pictures
and you can tell he wanted to go,
I love those paper memories.

Because the battle wound,
him wanting to play and not sit still,
and him looking cute in his big blue tie
is just part of who he is.

And who he is, is so cute and sweet.

  1. Nice poem, but you forgot to mention the poetry selling on the streets phase of your life!
